Visit to Fukunaga's Laboratory

2013-10-03

Yesterday I went to Tokyo to visit professor Alex Fukunaga laboratory. Professor Fukunaga is an old colleague who gave me a lot of valuable input when I was still a PhD student, and recently gave an invited lecture on parallel optimization here in Tsukuba University.

In this visit I met his students and gave an overview of my own research activities. While my own activities are mostly application oriented, Professor's Alex laboratory is mostly geared towards theoretical research. We discussed a bit the different points and characteristics of the two types of approach to research.

One of the students gave me a scare when he said the old Komaba dormitory had been demolished! I thought it was the one I stayed at the first time I came to Japan. Fortunately, he was talking about another Komaba dormitory I didn't even know existed.
